How to find red mutagens in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Red mutagen is a useful resource to gather in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. You use it to improve your skills and abilities for Geralt. Unfortunately, Red Mutagens are some of the hardest to locate in the game. There are a handful of reliable farming locations in the game, and some notable mobs you can hunt down that have a higher chance of dropping them.

Best Monsters That Drop Red Mutagen

To receive red mutagen, you need to kill monsters and loot their corpses. Red being the rarest of the colored mutagens, only a handful of monsters have a chance of dropping them, and none of them are pushovers. These are the ones you want to fight that have a chance to drop a red mutagen:

  • Devourers
  • Alghouls
  • Insurance
  • Nekkars (Warriors)
  • Hags
  • Goules
  • Drowners

Devourers and Alghouls are the best mobs to hunt if you're looking for Red Mutagen. Devourers are a bit tricky, especially if you forget they exploded before dying in battle. You can easily find yourself at the explosive end of one of them, and soon you're in low health, or worse. Alghouls are also difficult as you have to use the Axii spell to lower their armor; otherwise, you cannot damage them.

Arachas, Nekkars (warriors), Hags, Ghouls, and Drowners are also decent sources to research. Drowned are some of the worst at having red mutagen on them, so you might want to avoid looking for them until you reach Skellige. Many of these creatures have a lower chance of seeing a red mutagen drop than a Devourer or Alghoul, but you may encounter them more frequently.

Best Places to Find Red Mutagen

The monsters you encounter on your journey have the chance to drop the red mutagen, but you need to find them. They are everywhere in The Witcher 3, and you have to do everything to locate them. Here are the best places to find your prey:

Significant Skellige areas include Redgill and the Whale Graveyard. You can spawn the Drowners on the Redgill Coast by traveling to the area, killing them, returning to the sign, then teleporting anywhere in Velen. After that, head back to the Redgill Coast and the drowners should respawn. One of them usually drops a single red mutagen. If they don't reappear, return to one of the signs in Velen, meditate for 24 hours, then try again.

For Velen, you can visit Toderas Village to take on a small group of Devourers and an Alghoul. You'll want to take down the Devourers first, then take on the Alghoul. Unfortunately, this group does not appear again. You'll be able to reliably loot at least one red mutagen, but you'll have to keep going to find more. You can still locate Arachas south of the Crookback Bog Orphanage.
